35mm Slides to Digital

Slide Scanning

Scanning an old compilation of 35mm slides is just an ideal way to both conserve and provide them new life. By using either flatbed scanner or dedicated film scanner and personal computer, one can transfer the whole box of slides to hard drive filled with images. The work flow involving slide preparation, adequate software configuration, archiving and image editing will change the images from sliding format to digital files ready for use on web or for printing.

The major steps involved in 35mm Dlides to Digital

• Settle on slides you want to scan and position them in slide holder. In dedicated servers, one can scan more than one image at a time and is an appropriate option to scan slides. On the other hand, if you want to use flatbed scanner, the holder is likely to accommodate only one slide at a time. Moreover, it is also essential to make certain that slide is completely free from dirt and dust.
• Despite of the software one is going to use, there are certain basic adjustments he or she has to configure like setting color mode to rgb and setting color to grayscale if the image is black or white. Then, set the resolution and finally specify or set format of output file to .tiff.
• Now, scan every slide by starting from software. If one wants to scan more than one slide at a time, he needs to ensure that software is set up accordingly. If one is not sure about the complex settings of software, it is better to go for a ‘preview scan’ first, make required adjustments and then start with normal scan.
• Open out all scanned slides on some photo editing software and start editing images to add more quality. Some older slides may require contrast as well as color corrections to reinstate them back to original state. The best part is, scratches or other physical blemishes can also be fixed during scan.

Then, save files in a format you want. Edited image still is in uncompressed, large file format and one needs to transfer it to a form which is both useful and smaller.

Lastly, take the backup of original file, but be sure to preserve original as one might feel the need to come back to this master copy and work upon it to create some other versions such as black/white conversions and cropped selections.
