Although people have moved to digital cameras, still negatives can be found in various homes. Negatives have been an excellent way of preserving memories and were in use for a long time. Even today, there are several people who bring negatives into use and the best part is that these negatives can be used with the new technology as well. In case of preserving 35mm negatives, people can simply scan the negatives and can store them in computers, CD’s or DVD’s. Not just this, one can also scan 35mm negative and can get colored print outs for the same.
Scanning Negatives
Always opt for the right scanner because some flatbed scanners cannot create the intensity that is required to penetrate a negative to copy details. A good scanner records the photo with higher dpi resolution, which results in a good quality version of the negative.
Select the negative and insert it smoothly into the negative holder of scanner. The negative holder of scanner can hold 5 negatives at the same time. The negatives must be loaded horizontally so as to view a proper image on the computer screen.
Clean and wash the negative properly and use grain alcohol to remove dust or any other particle. Surface of the color negative should be soft for getting a better output. If any thing has stuck to the surface of negative, a film cleanser or Q – tip should be used. These are very effective in removing artifact from the 35mm negative. Always, avoid negative from being rubbed through hand.
After cleaning the negative properly, insert the holder in scanner immediately. There is an indication arrow on the ION device that helps to insert the film strip. Keep trying to fit the holder, until the preview of images is not visible on screen.
Preview all five images on the screen and adjust them appropriately. One can easily change the orientation of image through image editor, but sometimes system does not read the image properly. In such a case, click OK and save the image into the SD card or USB.
Removing dust and artifact is an important aspect, but the negatives must be made clear and visible by using an image editor. Some old and faded negatives are very hard in regaining clarity, so people can make adjustments in the contrast and exposure of image.
Although people can clear artifacts and dirt from the image, still clarity depends a lot on the fact that how old is the negative. So, to get a clear picture, scan 35mm negative and preserve your memories.
