Photo storage

There are so many options available for photo storage these days including online facility. In actual fact, there are so many alternatives that one might get confused in making a decision regarding why to select one web photo storage website over the other. Below are given some important tips that will help you learn how to make old photos last for many generations through adequate storage. In order to store the photos properly, one needs certain things like permanent markers, metal storage or acid free boxes, mats, backboards, acid free paper, plastic bags or pvc free sleeves.

Tips for photo storage

• Take out all photographs from the peel and stick to albums. The materials from which the photos are made of like cardboard, glue and ordinary plastic can damage images over the time. If one is using a commercial photograph album, it should be labeled as ‘acid free’.
• Remove any paper clips, staples, tape, rubber bands or glue that might dent, scratch and stain photos before inserting them in album, frame or storage box.
• Do not forget to label back of image gently with permanent marker. Include ages and names of individuals in photos along with the place where these were taken. Never make use of a ball pen to write as the ink is likely to fade after some time that can damage the image.
• To store photos individually, put them in some plastic sleeves (void of polyvinyl carbonate) that can be bought at any photograph supply stores. Sandwich bands made of plastic are better and are reasonable choice over sleeves.
• If one is having a large stack of photos, it is advisable to layer all of them between ‘acid free’ cardboard boxes. The larger image photographs can be stacked easily in closet or cabinet.
• When framing, one should make use of acid free mats in order to keep images from touching glass and ‘acid free’ backboard to avoid worsening of the photo.
• If one wants to frame a precious image, think of having it copied before inserting it under the glass.

Additionally, one should also avoid the usage of products made from wood like paper and cardboard as they can harm the images. A general rule is to store the images where one is comfortable, that means, neither too cold, nor too hot, dry or wet. Moreover, one should not keep photos in basements or garages as there photos will be subjected to excessive humidity and severe temperature fluctuations.
