Large format Film Scanning

Large format Film

Before knowing about large format film scanning let us know what a film scanner is.

A film scanner is a device which can convert an image on a film negative or a slide into a digital image file, which can be used on a computer. Large format film scanning is gaining momentum because of its high demand. If you want to scan some of the large format films you may need some of the large format film scanners. Before starting the large format film scanning you need to do some pre-scan settings like for example setting the dpi (dot per inch). Before scanning you need to select the color and the contrast using the software available to get the high quality images.

Some of the scanners available for large format film scanning differ in the software used, time taken to complete the scan, varying contrast, maximum resolution that it can handle. If you are using a low quality scanner for large format film scanning the quality may not be good and the image might be blurring. The high quality scanner captures bright lights to give a high quality image. So as a buyer before buying the scanners for large format film scanning you should be careful and do lot of research.

Some of the scanners for large format film scanning have been combined with the flatbed scanners which are outfitted with the dust removers, in this new version you can also scan more than one negative at a time, and it also has adapters for the slides. The dust which cannot be removed mechanically from the large format film can be easily removed using these scanners.

The large format film scanning also can also be done to obtain the color images. To obtain the large paintings, textile designs, and digitizing the portraits. You need not require a special scanner to scan your colored large format films instead you just need a charge coupled device attached to your old flatbed or drum type scanner. You can also use less color image sensors which is less expensive compared to your traditional film scanners.

If you want to obtain a better quality image of your large format film scanning, its better to choose charge coupled device scanner as it gives best image quality, with wide dynamic range and uniform color. But the problem with the charge coupled device is its geometric accuracy is not good so you can’t use this to scan your engineering drawings, maps or large size. For scanning the films which should be geometrically accurate, it’s better to use the color image sensor because it has better resolving power. The resolution of the scanner is described in dpi (dots per linear inch).

The large format film scanning gives better quality image as compared to 35mm film scanning as the resolution will be high and the enlargement that has to be is also less for large format films. The quality of the image obtained after print will also be good as it captures bright colors, and removes the maximum dust, to make the image clear and scratch free.
